We wash our faces, hands, hair, and clothes—shouldn’t we be doing the same for our makeup brushes? A host of bacteria can thrive in unwashed makeup applicators. Learn how to clean makeup brushes to get the most out of every piece of makeup you own!
Why Should You Clean Your Brushes?
Having a clean applicator is an important step in BOTH your skincare and makeup routine. We use multiple brushes and blenders to regularly swipe, dab, tap, and blend makeup seamlessly into the skin. It’s important to ensure that those tools we use on the daily are clean and pristine.
A host of bacteria can live in unwashed makeup brushes which then get transferred back into our skin, causing complexion problems. The dirtier a makeup brush is, the more likely you are to have problems with irritated skin, clogged pores, and even breakouts. Not to mention spotty application — dirty, crusty brushes won’t apply any product evenly, and isn’t that their main job?
Cleaning makeup brushes should be a staple in your beauty regimen. If you’re using heavier products like cream or liquid foundation, or cream based blushes and brushes, you’ll want to clean your brushes at least once a week. Beauty blenders are a little more high maintenance — those you’ll want to rinse out daily with soap and water.

Cleaning Makeup Brushes
Learning how to clean makeup brushes is quick and easy:
Step 1: Gently run your brushes under luke-warm water, avoiding the base of the bristles. Getting the base of the brush too wet will loosen the glue attaching them to the handle and you’ll end up losing bristles.
Step 2: Pour a small amount of my BRIAN M+W BRUSH CLEANER on a paper towel.
Step 3: Rub your brush back and forth gently to cleanse the bristles of any left over product.
Step 4: Once all the pigmentation from product build up is more or less gone from your brushes, reform the brush to its original shape. This is important! You don’t want your brushes drying with splayed bristles — keeping the brush’s original shape will ensure you get the same coverage you did before you started cleaning.
Step 5: Lay brushes out flat on a clean towel to dry overnight.
When it comes to cleaning makeup brushes, Brian M+W has got you covered! We make the whole process quick, easy, and seamless. Your makeup routine should be less about mess and stress and more about feeling your best! That starts with clean makeup brushes.
